Back to the Feature - Wale

If you haven’t heard of Wale yet, you will soon.  Wale has been one of the hottest new artists to come out in the past year.  Repping DC, Wale’s laid back style is one that almost any fan of hip-hop can relate.  This mix tape includes songs featuring Bun B, Royce Da 5’9, Currensy, Memphis Bleek, Talib Kweli, Joe Budden, and Lady Gaga.  Chillin ft Lady Gaga was by far the most popular song off of this mix tape.  However, my favorite song off of this tape, and of the summer, is New Soul.  It is a really good, chilled back, song.  It makes the entire mix tape worth checking out.  Be on the look out for Wale’s CD within the next year, it should be good.

Drake – The Drought Is Over: Friends With Money

Drake - The Drought Is Over: Friends With Money

Drake - The Drought Is Over: Friends With Money

This is a pretty solid mix tape.  Unfortunately, most of these songs have all appeared on previous mix tapes.  One thing I’ve noticed about the mix tape game is that some people tend to keep putting out new mix tapes with songs that have already been released.  A lot of these are not ‘official’ (put out by the artist), but still: it gets annoying.  I’ve found this is particularly true with Lil Wayne/Drake mix tapes.  A good idea is to read the comments about the mix tape and you can usually find out if it is new content.

Anyways, regardless of whether it is older not, it is pretty good.  Still Drake is by far my favorite songs on the mix tape.  He absolutely kills it over Dre’s Chronic 2001 song, Still Dre.  This mix tape might be worth your time if you do not have a lot of the other songs on there already.

Here is another download option if you don’t like Datpiff:

B.O.B. vs Bobby Ray

B.O.B. vs Bobby Ray

Track Listing

Track Listing

B.O.B. is an up and coming artist out of Atlanta.  Signed to Grand Hustle, expect big things from this guy.  He has one of the most refreshing styles I have heard in quite some time.  He shows his versatility with this mix tape.  The first half of the CD is his “B.O.B.” style and the second half is his “Bobby Ray” style.  I have to say there is something for everyone on this mix tape.   My favorite tracks on here are I’m that Nigga ft T.I., Do You Have the Stamina ft Kanye West, Voltage, and Satalite.  You can pretty much listen to mix tape all the way through.  His first CD is going to amazing.  Here is a link to one of his songs on youtube:

If you like T.I. or chill music than this mix tape is definitely worth your time.  Here is the download link:

Kush 2009 a must download! Ya Boy is the next big thing on the west coast!

September 14, 2009 at 5:27 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , , )

Ya Boy - Kush 2009

Ya Boy - Kush 2009

Ya Boy is a new artist from the West Coast, representing San Fransisco.  He hasn’t dropped his first album yet, but he currently has 5 mix tapes out.  Kush 2009 is one of the best mix tapes I’ve heard all year.  Rapping over some of Dre’s beats from Chronic 2001, Ya Boy absolutely kills it.  Friends who I’ve had listen to him have compared him to The Game and Nas.  I absolutely agree, he has the raspy voice of Nas and the same aggressive style as The Game.  Ya Boy is going to be the next big thing out of the West Coast.  There are also rumors circulating that he might be on a track on Dre’s new Detox album.  My favorite song from this mix tape is Bang Bang. If you are going to check out any mix tapes this year, this is the one to get.  Here is a link to the download:

Be Sure To Get Chamillionaire’s New Mixtape: Mixtape Messiah 7 (The Final Installment)

August 6, 2009 at 2:54 pm (Uncategorized)

Chamillionaire_Mixtape_Messiah_7-front-large

I’ve been listening to Chamillionaire since about 2005, since the release of The Sound of Revenge.  I liked the songs on the CD, but I never really thought anything else about it, or him.  When this mixtape popped up on DatPiff yesterday, I was very intrigued.  I had never listened to any of Chamillionaire’s mixtapes before, which is very surprising considering this is his 7th mixtape of this series.  However, I enjoyed it so mucht that I went and downloaded Mixtape Messiah 2 and 3 yesterday as well.  I’ve got to say that I was really impressed with the mixtape.  It gave me a glimpse into the potential of Chamillionaire, it really showed me that he isn’t just a ringtone rapper.  He lays some tracks over the Best She Ever Had and Breathe beats which are really good.  I also really liked Famous, Internet Thugs Attack, and Playa Status. This is a great mixtape that is definitely worth checking out, I’m really looking forward to his CD dropping later this year now.

The Verdict:

3 1/2 Mikes

I would just recommend getting this from DatPiff.com for now.  In the next few days I’ll be searching for a website that allows you to download more than 3 mixtapes a day.  Part 2 of this mixtape just came out today, it’s also worth checking out.

Check Out The Game’s Mixtape: You Know What it is Volume 3

July 31, 2009 at 3:31 pm (Uncategorized)

You Know What It Is Volume 3

You Know What It Is Volume 3

Release in August of 2006, You Know What It Is Volume 3 goes hard after the members of The Game’s former group, G-Unit.  This mixtape is great on many levels.  Not only are The Game’s disses witty and well-timed, but he delivers them in different ways throughout the mixtape.  The song 300 Barz and Runnin displays The Game’s full versatility as he raps over a montage of over 10 different beats.  His G U-Not movement truly embarrassed 50-Cent and his posse, and even had people in 50′s own hometown screaming G-G-G-G U-Not!  This can fully be seen on Game’s DVD called Quit Snitchin! Quit Lyin! With hundreds of mixtapes flooding the market today (many with the same songs), it’s hard to decide which one’s are worth a download.  This one is.  By far one of the best mixtapes I’ve heard in the past month.

Normally I will be discussing more recent mixtapes, but this is a good one to kick things off.  A good place to download it is at www.datpiff.com.  It’s relatively easy to register, the only drawback of this site is you are limited to 3 downloads a day

The Verdict:

Mixtape a Day is Here!

July 30, 2009 at 1:46 pm (Uncategorized)

Welcome everyone, my name is Brandon.  This is my blog dedicated to Mixtapes.  I plan on reviewing a mixtape everyday on here.

I have been an avid hip-hop fan since 1999.  In the past few months I have been listening to many different mixtapes.  I plan to giving you some good sites to download mixtapes; as well as giving you advice on which mixtapes to download and which mixtapes to avoid.  I will also give my interpretation of how that mixtape has influenced hip-hop, or how it will in the future.

Tomorrow:  The Game’s mixtape You Know What it is Volume III
